The 2012 ICC World Twenty20 will be the fourth ICC World Twenty20 competition, an international Twenty20 cricket tournament in Sri Lanka will be held between 18 September and 07 October 2012. The calendar is published by the ICC. This will be the first World Twenty20 tournament held in an Asian country, the last three prisoners in South Africa, England and West Indies respectively. 

Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga has been chosen as the event ambassador for the ICC tournament. The format sees four groups of three in a preliminary round. India and England are in the same group and will be joined by the second place in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, Afghanistan. Champions of ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, Ireland is in a group with the West Indies and Australia. Sri Lanka, South Africa and Zimbabwe, Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh are the other two groups.
